Useful Emotions

The other day I was asked to blog on the most useful emotion. After some thought, I decided on pain because emotional pain is as real and devastating as physical pain. As I work on my books, pain is a core emotion. Whether it’s the pain of separation, worry, rejection, wrong choices, disappointment, failure or any number of life’s agonies, pain plays a key role. I certainly draw from personal experiences to pull in the right emotion I want a reader to feel. That doesn't mean I’ve ever experienced kidnapping, drug addiction, brain-numbing terror, or some of the other dreadful things I’ve written about, but I have experienced great emotional pain in my life. I draw from that fear, sorrow, and loss to put my pen in the right emotional spot in the story.

Let’s look at the scenes during Allaire’s kidnapping in Awakening. When she first comes out of her stupor, she knows she’s in deep doo. She narrowly escaped being raped and suffered a pretty nasty punch to the face by an adult male for her bravery. Her world is starting to implode little by little. First comes anger, and then frustration, and fear. As those emotions dissolve and hope dwindles, raw pain pulses on the hard, cold floor with her. She’s desolate, half-frozen, starving to death, and desperate to be found. Her agony transpires physical and emotional pain and encompasses spiritual pain. She thinks God has given up on her, too. Her dreams and love are erased by an overwhelming heartache she can’t assuage. Near death, profound physical pain joins the tug ‘o war. So, I’m sitting on the cold, filthy floor with Allaire. She’s grimy, putrid-smelling, and soulless. I keep probing the scene until I’ve developed something so compelling you feel as though you are sitting right there with her…until I can feel the cold breath of death in my bones and the inability to cry because I’m too dehydrated.

In Avenging, there’s an emotional scene with Devon when Allaire is going to leave him for her own safety. Devon crumbles under the emotional pain. He has gone crazy for nearly two books (LOL) trying to protect her and he’s failing miserably. He’s put himself last so she can have whatever she needs to recover and feel safe again. Now she’s pulling the carpet out from under him. That pain makes him rear up and set her straight. He finally spills his guts about what it’s like to be Devon Mercer.

Pain is a good emotion, indeed.

I can’t wind this up without saying how happy I am that Avenging Allaire was given a Top Pick rating from Night Owl Reviews. Melinda reviewed Awakening Allaire and nabbed Avenging the moment it was offered. I hope you’ll take the time to read her remarks and cruise around Night Owl Romance - they have so much to offer. Beside reviews, they have all the book trailers, book blurbs from some of the best books on the market, free reads, author pages where you can get to know many of us, and a free, online magazine. Check them out: Night Owl Romance.

This book has great characters and the way Ms. Church has us in suspense trying to guess who the real culprits are made this an excellent read.  I recommend this book as well as the first in the series!” Melinda, Night Owl Reviews
