1Place For Romance Anniversary Blog Tour

Welcome to Romance With SASS—stop #11 on the 1PlaceForRomance Anniversary blog tour! I hope you are having fun and are discovering some terrific authors and books! I think I see a shadow following you from Charisma Knight's party (http://charismaknight.blogspot.com/). What a fantastic blog she has for paranormal fans and her books look great!

Since you've already got some shivers up your spine, let's talk about channeling your inner creep.

All of my books have a strong suspense element to them driven by powerful, dark characters. I like to think of myself as a nice Catholic girl, but in reality, I turn that off to successfully write characters that you loathe or fear. I read the news, police cases, and sometimes talk to my sister the shrink to get ideas about how twisted humans can be. And then I push it.

I need to understand that character as if we were best buds. Yeah, shake off the creepy feeling that gives you. My current bad ass is a 300 year-old vampire who hates humans who have happy endings. He wants to kill them all. The average vampire thinks Ladislav Husek is something like a bookkeeper for the dead but they could be really wrong. I have thought about him so much I can describe how his long, coal-black hair feels. He ties it back on the crown of his head. When he's angry, I can hear the huff of his breath and see his lips curl back in a snarl. I have a strong sense of how he sounds, moves, and what his body feels like. The pain that drives him makes him incredibly dangerous. Yet, there's another element to him that makes him weak and lose control in a much different way.

When I started "writing" Ladislav, I approached him a bit timidly and that really frustrated my muse. In fact, I started dreaming about this character because I think I was denying who he really is. When I stopped censoring myself (because he is so twisted) the story became a lot of fun to write. I let out my inner creep and the story took off!

As part of this cool blog tour, I'm giving away a set of my first two books available at 1RomanceEbooks – Awakening Allaire and Avenging Allaire. These erotic suspense novels are full of criminals of the human kind. Kidnapping, corporate crime, murder, drugs, adultery, manipulation, and deception all woven around an erotic love story. You'll wonder how Devon and Allaire will survive. Tell me which character traits give you the shivers and whether you enjoy mostly men or mostly women as antagonists. You could win both books. Don't forget to leave your participant code with your comment.

From here, please visit the lovely and talented Kate Richards – another good Catholic girl who's working hard to "get over it!" LOL http://katerichards.wordpress.com She's stop #12.

Thank you for visiting my blog. I hope you'll subscribe and come back soon.

Until the next time.

Margie

Dominique, thanks for coming over! I have a character named Lucy in my first two books who is like that. She starts out pretty even keel, but falls in love with Devon. She thinks she might have a chance with him when Allaire is kidnapped. Unfortunately, Allaire comes home and Devon still loves Allaire with ever spec of his body and soul. As you can imagine, Lucy isn't happy about it. In Avenging Allaire, her last screw comes loose and watch out. She's a menace. Good to see you and thanks for the insight.

Do you have any books that are a little less scary than the one about the creepy vampire? I like action and struggle, but books that make me feel like something might jump out and go "boo" just make me too nervous to really enjoy myself while I'm reading.

Yes, Adrienne, I have less creepy books. My first two are erotic suspense of the human kind. There are plenty of folks in those books you'll love to hate and plan to avoid crossing paths but nothing that'll make you look over your shoulder after you turn out the lights. And they're very steamy...definitely will calm your nerves! LOL

A set of Awakening Allaire and Avenging Allaire will be given away on the tour but if you don't win them, they're available at 1RomanceEbooks.com or pop me a note. Take care Adrienne!

Looking back to my favorite books, the best ones have by psychologically scary. Even the horror ones, it's a head game that has you on the edge. If it is too obvious, I just write it off. For some reason I have always pictured men as the best antagonists in my head, but there have been a few books where the authors have had some REALLY good scheming women. Since Vamps with really well developed characters are one of my favorites, I will need to look up your books!

Hi Marcieo. ICAM with your head game perspective. I'm taking a class on how to write bondage scenes to better understand the emotions of people who enjoy that lifestyle or just want to dabble in it to add some spice to their lives. The teacher has a cool website called Write Sex and I spent some time reading Sascha's stuff and while I don't live the lifestyle, I totally agree with his perspective about getting in the character's head. Until you really do that, you're just scratching the surface and not making the character 3D. I think superficialness is okay if the character is just used briefly, but core characters need to be fully developed. I hate to think I am best buds with some of the nasty characters I've created but....the good part is I have the delete key! ROLF. Come by again and if you get one of my books, please give me your thoughts.

Hi Brandy. I think the fun part about a psycho is figuring out what made him or her the way they are. I suppose an easy thing to do is blame their insanity on some metabalic or genetic problem. It's more interesting to me at least, to see them act out because of a past transgression or crime against them. It's not fun or pleasant but it makes the characters richer, if that makes sense. Enjoy the tour and come back sometime.

Traits that creep me out are remorselessness. When a character can do something heinous with a serene look about them gives me the chills. And I'm more disturbed seeing a woman be that way. This is the same type of twisted bad guy I like to read about. I want to like him as much as hate him. He needs to be real. I want to be able to indentify with him and know he could reside in the dark place in the mind most people have, but never dare to go or look into.

First of all, my "Blog Tour Participant" number is: 8032.

In answer to your question, it depends on what the story is about whether I would like a man or a woman as an antagonist. As a rule, I do like to have the antagonist be the opposite sex of whatever the protagonist is. I don't generally like it to be the same sex for both.

And, the traits that give me the creeps the most are if the antagonist is a narcissist (in love with himself/herself)--and especially if they pretend to love YOU for some gain. Plus, if they are sociopathic/psychopathic, too--then that's a real whammy!

    So, there you have it.

Awww Man! Your Vamp sounds like my kind of dude! I LOVE villans - they make the story. My family and friends worry about me, as Ireally do love a story with a great bad guy/gal -- even in Disney movies! I guess I live varcariously through them...

What gives me the shivers, is when the villan plays mind games - I mean, simple, innocent acts that totally scrambling your thinking until you wonder if it's YOU that has the problem (and not him.)

I also enjoy a villan who is truly convinced he is right in what he is doing - calm, cool, collected - and there is no saving him (or you) from his demented thinking.

Oh - and I can't forget - a villan who is truly intelligent - who comes off like your friendly neighbor next door.

...and what if this guy is in love with you? There would be no stopping him, he will have you - one way or another - and god forbid anyone else thinking they will have you...

Anyway, I love M/M stories - but I prefer my antagonist to be women. Hell hath no fury as a woman scorned... (and some of them can be down right scary -- especially if they are the mother/grandmother type...)

Much success with your stories! Uncle Moose - 7991

Dear Uncle Moose....LOL I had to write that. Such a clever screen name. I only read suspense books because I love that intellectual criminal. It's no fun if the cops are onto the guy or girl in the third chapter or worse yet, the reader is. I hope you'll be watching for the sequel to Love Bites. I'll be changing things up a bit from my M/F stories <wink> and you should really enjoy Tori. She arrives on the first page, guns ablazing.

Come back again please. I appreciated your detailed insight and I'm interested in comments from people who enjoy gay love stories. Those books are so popular right now. Take care!

Hi Liz!  These books are suspensful - not necessarily horror - so they keep you guessing and reading and feeling edgy. I enjoy that more than being scared. I'm kind of a sissy that way! Glad you like vamp stories and I hope you'll check into Love Bites.

Wow Margie...your books sound so good!! Can't wait to read them! I've added them to the top of my TBB list, especially the one with Ladislav in it!!(well, I just have his name down!!)

Pretty much the only trait that gives me the shivers is when the antagonist BELIEVES they are right and cannot see that they are wrong in any way. And I'm not particular whether it's a male or female. Wrong is wrong!!

    Hallöchen Margie,

Love this discussion and want to jump right in – cold or obsessed psychopaths, stalkers and kidnappers, remorseless killers… human or paranormal… *shiver*!!! But the antagonists that creep me out the most are of the human variety, the sneaky sociopaths that either don’t stand out at all and you wouldn’t expect to be the bad guys as they are portrayed as friends; or the ones the protagonist (and reader) knows are behind all the weird things happening but that can fool everyone else. Read a book by Barbara Elsborg – Anna in the Middle - with an antagonist of the second variety who I found just scary beyond words. I don’t care which gender the antagonists are, men can be as sneaky and creepy as women.

I haven’t read any of your books yet but your two contemporary suspense stories seem to be right up my alley. If I don’t win them, I’ll have to check them out. So I’ll read you one way or the other

    ‘Til then take care

Never really thought about character traits that make me shiver. And I enjoy whatever gender antagonist a good writer gives us. I will say that I prefer more male that female antagonists, but that may just be because I'm female and I don't like to imagine the gender capable being the problem.
Hope that makes sense. First night with the new grandbaby in the house and it's 3am.

I can promise you there'll be no hurting children in my books-at least not by one of these psychos. I still write romances and if kids are involved, it's more of a family setting and usually humorous. I have kids - twin 4-year-olds in my first two books - the Allaire arch - and they are very funny, naughty kids. They bring in some levity to an otherwise depressing scenario.  Good luck with winning oodles of prizes and come back again.

Being stalked, or hunted really creeps me out. Fear of the unknown, and things I don't understand. Noises I can't find a source for. Blinding darkness in an unfamiliar place. Sensory deprivation of, sight, sound, smell, touch, taste. Being eaten alive. Being a innocent random victim. Being kept as a plaything and tortured to the point of death, then revived for a thrill. The absence of remorse or emotion in someones eyes, like doll eyes or shark eyes. Being helpless and unable to save my children from danger, or watching them suffer. Animal qualities or characteristics (which oddly enough is also sexy). Cold, calculated acts of physical violence for sexual pleasure.

Sometimes, what creeps me out the most are characteristics at odds within a person that enable them to fool us. Twisted, evil men with only one soft spot in their heart for one person or thing, but a raging temper or dark psyche that could go off and destroy what the one thing they love in single heartbeat. The fact there is something redeeming inside them, and I want to root for them creeps me out because I wonder if I know anyone like who's pulling the wool over my eyes.

Male antagonists are more frightening to me. I don't know if I've been taught to think that, or as a woman, I'm instinctually afraid of men. Probably both. A woman with a blood lust and no maternal/protective instincts is pretty creepy too.

Awesome insights, Heidi. Thanks so much! Lots of times I think our dark heros are the broken men who have a good woman save them - to use kind of a western analogy. They're not so much bad boys IMO but just a bit lost. Wade is a lot like that in Love Bites. He's so conflicted. As a vampire, he knows he has to stay away from Jui but he really doesn't want to and his inner conflicts manifest in violence. Wade also immitates animal sounds when he's angry or relaxed - he purrs somewhat in Jui's arms.

The other things you said about sensory deprivation - check out Awakening Allaire. She's kidnapped in that book. It's dark and hopless for her.

I hope you'll come back and read my books. I think you'd like them. Thanks, Heidi.
