Popularity of Bondage
The seeming rise of bondage in erotic romance seems like a new trend that, like most trends will rise and fall. Yet the truth is, it's not a trend, it's just being noticed.
In fiction, specifically erotic fiction, bondage has always sold well. The scenario by most women is that of a power struggle ending up in her being "forced" to do what is wanted of her, usually by a very dominating man. I covered part of why this erotic fantasy is popular in an article I wrote for Mama Kitty Reviews.
Having taught a class on BDSM in Romance for writers who want to dabble OR get full on into the lifestyle, we explore the many facets of what bondage actually means.
For example, the levels of bondage can vary in terms of intensity or style. And a truly clever writer is able to pull the reader into that fantasy world with his craft. Think about it, the images of bondage that normally come to mind for most readers involve something either really silly or something truly frightful.
Take that idea of being restricted and mixing it with your sexual desires With the rising popularity in e-books that every closet freak in the free world can buy, the "forbidden" authors only need to write a well-crafted imaginary tale that draws you, the reader, in. It's not a guarantee but for authors like Joey W. Hill and Laurel K. Hamilton, it's been something that has only added to the depth of their stories.
Publishers of great bondage stories include Sizzler Editions, where owner Jean Marie Stine has brought in a high standard amongst authors. Authors like M. Christian and Claire Thompson have a huge following in the kink scene and it's well deserved. Bondage stories written BY women have a slightly different feel to them than what men write, I feel. Except for my writing of course ![]()
For authors of bondage stories, we've covered this topic at WriteSEX when we discussed selling erotic fiction.
The funny thing about bondage fiction is that many folks speculate it'll fall out of popularity. Except that the Story of O is such a classic novel of BDSM that there is an entire website (run by Kink.com) dedicated to it. The Sleeping Beauty Series by Anne Rice is brought up by an entirely new generation of readers and then they discover the Lifestyle itself actually existing. Whether they take the plunge or not remains to be seen, but they found their start in reading. Those classics are coveted for a reason.
I have to tell you, with all the stories I've written over the years, and the various ways I've incorporated bondage into them, one thing holds true for me right now. The genre will always have more than a cult following as long as human beings continue to explore their darker desires.

Hi, Sascha! Good survey of bondage in erotica/erotic romance! I was actually in your August workshop (different name and a powerlurker due to busy-ness beyond my control at the time) and thought it was EXCELLENT! Highly rec to anyone, should you off the workshop again.
