Outing K.b. Cutter

Welcome back, KB! Last time you were here, Summer Heat had just been released. Now you have the sequel and a short story, Killing Apathy, out. These are very different books. What inspires you to write the dark angst?

Thank you for inviting back to Romance with SASS!  To say I am thrilled to be here is quite the understatement.  –skin pebbles as I type-

Summer Heat has been in release since July 2010. It's proven to be something of an unexpected success, especially on Amazon Kindle, superseding my wildest expectations.  I was quite pleased when Noble Romance put out a call for the Love, Revisited anthology.  Kate and Madison were such a joy to write and it was quite liberating once again to buck conventional romance standards with these two fiery, spirited women.

Killing Apathy is dark stuff, to put it mildly. It straddles a number of thematic elements, a mélange of horror, satire, and BDSM eroticism.  I love the word mélange.  I so rarely get to use it in a sentence.  Get a copy.

I'm drawn to the dark side of humanity because I experience it on a regular basis. I've been a police officer for 23 years, slogging it out on the front lines of urban warfare for my entire adult life. While I can divorce myself from the sights and sounds of the job, its grim presence stays with me, lurking beneath the surface.  We all have a dark side, and most of us successfully suppress it on a subconscious level, but I find it’s cathartic to dip my toes into that emotional black pool and stir the waters. See what bubbles to the surface.

What inspires you and what shuts you down as a writer?

My inspiration comes from the oddest sources. It can be an overcast sky, a particular scent or a snippet of overheard conversation. What burns my ass (besides a flame about three feet high) is slavish devotion to clichés.  The romance genre is riddled with it.  It's time to embrace the alternative narrative voice and iconoclastic characters.

When people read something by K.B. Cutter, what do you want them to remember about your style, your abilities?
I want the readers to feel, taste and smell my words, immerse their senses in each sentence. I would hope that my style creates a vivid portrait of the characters in their mind. Plot is secondary. The real drive, emotional energy comes from the people who populate the story. I enjoy delving into my character's inner thoughts, turmoil and conflict.  I hope that passion resonated with readers.

Describe your idea of romance in novels.
Hmm.  My idea of romance in novels is quite different. First off and here is the BIG revelation-I'm male. And flamingly heterosexual. So romance readers may say, "Oh, great, a guy, huh? Slam, bam thank you ma'am" is his idea of romance. Now, while I cannot discount the visceral attraction of that statement, for me romance is an abstraction. It's not all about absurdly well-endowed, obsessive Alpha males and plucky, flawed heroines. Sure, that stuff comes into play, however, its' about establishing a connection not based on the obvious. I want the romance to be natural, even conflicted, on a thoroughly believable level.  I don't want the obvious to dominate; the subtle nuanced tension is much more attractive.

What's on your calendar for romance readers this year?
I have dark short, Sins of the Sparrow, coming soon from Black Label Books. They also published Killing Apathy. It's a tale that demonstrates nothing is what it appears to be and love can be both redemptive and a curse.

I have quite an ambitious WIP entitled Darker Side of Heaven- my first novel length work.  It's a dark, erotic tale of the coming conflict between the agents of Light and Darkness.  Where humans, Fallen Angels, Vampires, and slayers of the Wicked live and die, love and despair, all in the shadow of looming Armageddon.  I push the envelope of standard romance conventions with my characters and plot in Darker Side of Heaven. The action occurs in places not often found in the usual romance story. Nor is everything clearly black and white. I've imbued my pieces with a delight shade of gray. I've included a deliciously dark excerpt for your readers' pleasure!

If you could describe yourself as a pair of shoes, what would they be like?

Well…on Saturday nights I'm a pair of Fuck- Me stiletto pumps.

Mondays I'm a weathered pair of boat shoes.   -toothy grin-  I'd say I'm a comfortable, sturdy and goes with anything kind of foot wear!

What's your favorite escape?

The mountains slightly edge out the beach. I am fortunate to have a house in the Catskills, seven acres of wooded bliss, no internet, or cable TV. Campfires, deer with the occasional lugubrious howl of the coyote as my company. The photo at the top of this blog is from the Catskills.

Thank you Margie for hosting me. Your generosity is unrivaled.

You're such a flaming suck-up, too, K.b. Tell everyone about the great prizes.

I'm offering a fabulous prizes! One set of Summer Heat and Love, Revisited: Madison and Kate and a T-shirt  with the logo cover art from my latest release. 2nd and 3rd place prizes are logo t-shirts, just in time for the warm weather!  The shirts are XL and there is no option to change that so you hafta deal. LOL

All ya hafta do is answer the following question:  What do you think of a flaming het male writing lesbian fiction?  Don't forget your email address!

Summer Heat Blurb:

Summer: Brilliant blue sky, pristine sandy beach, the tang of brine wafting through the air. Hard bodies splashing in the surf. Cool drinks in frosted glasses, what more could one want? For Madison and Kate, two intimately close friends, it is Paradise.

Madison left her troubles behind on the mainland, so why was she still plagued by them? Why couldn’t she be more like Kate, uninhibited, sexually confident? This was supposed to be a relaxing beach getaway, so why wasn’t it?

Madison didn’t have the answers; distracted by her pending divorce, angst over her own sexuality and Kate’s body and scorching libido, how could she think straight? Coupled with a chance encounter with a local Surfer Boy, sexually charged erotic fantasy collides with reality.

And as the sun heats up the beach, the passion between Kate and Madison grows twice as hot. Get your copy.

Thematic elements:  F/M/F and F/F

Blurb: Love, Revisited-Madison and Kate from Summer Heat

Summer heat cools as blue sky fades to gray under the glare of Winters' chill. For Madison, attending her father's funeral in the cold, unforgiving landscape of rural upstate New York, it is the last place she thought she would encounter an ex-flame, reigniting a once dormant passion.

Madison soon learns the brutal truth behind the adage you can never go home. She yearns for the strength and touch of her lover, Kate, who is snowbound miles away.

Can she suppress the growing desire for her ex-lover? Will Kate fully commit to their relationship?

Is it possible to have a Love, Revisited? Get your copy.

Thematic elements:  M/F and F/F

Thanks for stopping by Val. Hey, WHO doesn't want to strut around in a pair of sexy pumps, huh?

I love the area where I have my little mountain retreat. Rural, bucolic, unspoiled. I'm most blessed.

I kept my gender under-wraps for fear it would turn female readers off, especially the genre I chose. However, given the success of Summer Heat, I think readers will be surprised that a het guy can pull off a lesbian romance.

I have some free reads at my website, hope you enjoy them. Have a snippet of a WIP there you might enjoy.

I wanted to challenge myself as a writer. I've always been drawn to the dark, gritty, noir- esque narrative voice and I figured, what the hell, let me try something COMPLETELY different.

Thank ya Margie, you are sOOO good for me ego!

Morning! Loved the interview, KB. It was quite a revelation that you are male. Most of the stories I've read from these sites are written by females. So, I figure why not. It'll be interesting seeing f/f fiction from an obviously different view. Both books sound great and Killing Apathy sounds intriguing. You mentioned developing the characters before the plot. I agree. Do you ever find that once they are established and given a mind of their own, that you follow their lead instead of them following your plotlines?
About your Saturday stilettos...my only question there is: what color?? LOL
Also, what other authors do you read and have they influenced your writing at all?

Good morning Cindy, thanks for taking the time to come here today.

I think my POV is laced with a bit more humor than the average f/f writer, but I'm not exclusive to that genre. I'm constantly testing myself. I actually have a short I plan to sub to Family Circle magazine!

The Summer Heat anthology was fun to write, with a touch of pathos in the latter story. And Killing Apathy is quite dark and twisted.

Yes, the characters always come first. And, they take the reigns once I get started, sometimes they go off the beaten path! Plot revolves around the characters, who shape and mold my world.

Oh, blood red stilettos, m'dear. My color dejour!

Wow, good question. Obviously, Margie Church, especially her Love Bites books. I dig Simon R. Green (Nightshade series) Jasper Fforde (Thursday Next books)Ed Lee (What a trip) and Richard Laymon (b-movie sensibility, but fun reads)

      Thank you!!!

      *waves* Hi David!

K.b. can speak for himself but as a woman who just sold her first m/m romance, there's a level of expectation that you'll screw it up because you "don't know" how it feels to be in this kind of a relationship. To me, that means research. When I write het romances, I still don't know exactly what it's like to be the male partner but I must do a convincing job.

You really should invite K.b. to blog with you...Killing Apathy made me sleep with the lights on.

The pleasures of genders are I believe quite different. Women hug and kiss one another's cheek and think nothing of it sexually, while some men would never hug another man and certainly would not kiss their cheek. Even those observing this cheek kissing would be wondering what's up under the zipper! I'm betting their are far more women aroused by two women embrassing passion than there would be men or even women, for that matter, aroused by watching two men plunging toward one another's victory. Even more arousing would be lip dripping affection between two women while wear loose skirts and only come up for air for sharing one another's flavor. Me..........I'm just a student learning the art of pleasure ...enjoying each lesson!

The mountains are shrugging off their winter coat. Soon, the foliage will be bright with Spring colors.

Still, the Rocky Mountain must be magnetically awe inspiring all snow capped, no?

People can write about the opposite gender, but again, for me it's believability and that requires research. You can't, IMO, replace a female pronoun with a male and call it right.

Kb, It was my pleasure to host you today. We'll be back tomorrow for any night owls....and of course to announce the prize winners.

There were more than 200 visits today. I couldn't be happier with all the fun we had. I know you sold some books, made some friends, and we are both tired.

Pour me a tall one....*pops a mint* I'll take that smooch now.

      Goodnight.

      Love,
      Margie
